Direct Answer In a small test on October 29, ChatGPT reasoned about the price after rewards, but it did not look for a reward before comparing stores. When a real, unused $5 reward was already in the conversation, it changed its recommendation. We're building a reward wallet for that moment: a place where the shopper's agent can read the rewards from the stores they have linked. It is in development and not yet available in ChatGPT. The store still decides whether a reward is valid at checkout.

The missing input in an agent's shopping decision

An AI shopping assistant can reason about price after discounts. But a reward code usually sits in an email, far from the conversation where a shopper asks which store to pick. The agent can only count a reward it can find and check.

In our October 14 post we asked where a reward code goes when an agent does the buying. This post is about the step before that: the comparison. Does ChatGPT look for rewards on its own, and does a verified one change its answer?

What we tested

On October 29 we ran prompts in fresh chats on our own ChatGPT Plus account, with Stabile's ChatGPT app installed, against our demo store, Stabile Agentic Commerce. None mentioned rewards, points, coupons or loyalty, and we confirmed every tool call in our server's event log. Three short runs: no shopper linked, then a test customer linked who held one real, unused $5 reward, then again after we removed a duplicate account.

Prompt (none mentioned rewards)Shopper linked?Reward tools called first? What happened
Store or Amazon?NoNoReasoned about price after discounts, but leaned Amazon because it could not verify a reward.
Reorder from the store; or, cheapest way to buy?NoYesChecked rewards and made them the first thing to confirm before paying.
Store or Amazon?Yes, real $5 rewardNoStill leaned Amazon, then offered to check. After we pressed its "Check my Stabile rewards" button it found the reward. Asked again in the same chat, it leaned toward the store if quality matched and the reward made the total cheaper.
Reorder from the storeYesInconsistentCalled the tools in one run, not in another after we connected a second account with the same name. With only the real shopper connected, it called them again and put the $5 code in its checklist.
Gift under $25; the store is one optionYesNo, every runPicked other retailers and said a reward might change the answer.

Nothing was bought, redeemed or created.

This is a small observation, not a benchmark: one account, six prompts, one to three runs each. That account's history holds many earlier Stabile tests, which likely made ChatGPT more willing to bring Stabile up. Treat it as an upper bound. The reward changing the pick happened once.

What it shows is a gap. ChatGPT already framed the choice as effective price, price after discounts and usable rewards, with a worked example of $17 minus a $3 reward versus $15, and it did so without calling any tool. But it fetched rewards only for reorder and "cheapest way" questions, never for discovery, comparison or gifts. A buyer agent should be able to ask for the rewards from a shopper's linked stores, get their terms and status, and estimate the price after the best one. Whether ChatGPT will call a tool built for that moment is unknown. Building for it is our bet.

Four things people call a wallet

"Wallet" now covers four different jobs, and a store feels each one differently.

KindExampleWhat it means for your store
Payment walletStripe's Link agent wallet; Apple Pay and Google PayYou receive an ordinary payment. Nothing about your rewards travels with it
Pass walletApple Wallet, Google WalletA loyalty card or coupon you issue, shown by a person by barcode or QR. We found no evidence that shopping agents read saved passes
Reward walletWhat we're buildingPointers to rewards your store issued, readable by the shopper's agent when it compares stores. You still validate at checkout
Account linkOne link per storeWhich shopper may see which store's personal reward data. A link to one store gives no access at another

Link. Link's agent wallet works through a spend request: the agent states the merchant, items and amount, the shopper approves, and the agent gets a card valid for 48 hours (Stripe's docs). In the public Link CLI repository we found no field for a store discount code, including in its checkout calls. Our inference, not Stripe's statement: because the amount is approved up front, an agent should learn about a reward before it asks for payment approval, not at checkout. A reward wallet would sit next to a payment wallet, not replace it.

Apple Wallet and Google Wallet. Both support coupon and loyalty passes, and Shopify loyalty apps such as LoyaltyLion offer them. If you issue passes, keep them. A pass is made for a person to show, and saving a coupon to a phone does not by itself apply it at online checkout. Phone passes are not part of our first version, and we haven't designed offering the same reward both ways.

How the reward wallet would work

This is a design, not a claim that stores are already publishing rewards into a shared wallet. In the first version, the way in is a reward email from a Stabile store. It would get an "Add to my AI reward wallet" button that opens a Stabile page showing the reward. The shopper could choose "Open in ChatGPT," which prefills a short message with a claim code, or "Get Stabile in ChatGPT." Saving a reward would also link that store to the shopper's ChatGPT account, and the page would say so first. If the store has turned the channel on, later rewards from that store could arrive automatically. Each other store needs its own link.

At comparison time a planned tool would estimate the price after the best usable reward at each linked store. The first version is narrow: one fixed-amount reward on the whole order, same currency, capped at the subtotal, with any minimum purchase taken from the store's discount settings. Anything else is reported as not supported, and shipping, tax, other discounts, product scope and eligibility are not checked.

The wallet would not be the source of truth. It holds pointers; the store's Shopify discount and Stabile's reward record decide, and the store's checkout validates. When a code is used anywhere, every wallet holding it would show it as used within about a minute.

Trust is part of the product

A shopper could save a reward only from an email sent to them. If they no longer have it, the fallback would be to verify on a Stabile web page with a code sent to their address, typed on the page and never into ChatGPT. OpenAI's app guidelines list OTP codes among the data apps must not collect.

Opening an email link would not save or link anything, because email scanners can open links. The claim pages would carry no third-party analytics and would not be cached. The wallet would not store a plain email address, and Stabile would not receive the conversation. Shoppers could unlink a store or delete the wallet from a management page, and those controls belong in the design before a privacy policy promises them.

What this means if you run a rewards program

  • An email-only code is invisible when it counts. If a shopper's agent is comparing you with another store, a reward sitting in an inbox adds nothing.
  • You stay in charge. Rewards come from your own Shopify discount settings, your checkout validates them, and you remain the merchant of record. The channel would be one setting, off by default, with no technical setup.
  • Keep your Apple or Google Wallet passes. They serve a different moment.
  • Expect rewards to become a comparison input. Agents comparing on effective price will favor the better reward. That is the upside, and also pressure on your offers.
  • Codes are bearer codes. A code shown in a chat could be shared or screenshotted. Single use, expiry and "not combinable" limit that. They don't remove it.

We don't know whether shoppers want this, whether ChatGPT will call an effective-price tool when comparing, whether OpenAI will accept the update, or how often a reward an agent saw will be accepted at checkout. Other assistants are out of scope for the first version. We have no price, timing, conversion or revenue claims.

Get on the list

The wallet is a preview, and we'd rather build it with stores than for them.

If you run a Shopify store: install Stabile's Shopify app. Stabile stores already send customers reward emails after a purchase. In the wallet we're designing, that email is where the "Add to my AI reward wallet" button would appear and show customers how to add the wallet in ChatGPT. Installing does not switch the wallet on. That would be a setting in the app, off until you choose. It puts your store first in line.

If you use another loyalty app, or you're not on Shopify: join the interest list and tell us your platform. The first version is Stabile stores only, so we can't promise a date or a fit, but we'd like to know where the demand is.

Shoppers have nothing to sign up for. The wallet would reach them through a store's reward email.

FAQ

Is this just a place to store coupon codes?

No. The intended use is for a buyer agent to read rewards across a shopper's linked stores and compare the price after the best one.

Is it the same as Stripe's Link agent wallet?

No. A payment wallet holds payment credentials; this one concerns store rewards and their terms. They could be used together. The agent may use reward information to compare, but the store's checkout validates the reward, and the design has no payment step.

Is it an Apple Wallet or Google Wallet pass?

No. Passes are made for a person to show, and the first version does not create them.

Can I use it today?

No. It is in development and not yet available in ChatGPT, and we have not submitted the planned version to OpenAI. Stabile's ChatGPT app is available today in the ChatGPT app directory for reward lookups. We plan to extend that same app into the wallet, subject to OpenAI's review.
