Direct Answer On September 28, 2026, Shopify said browser-based AI agents can now read, update and submit checkout on eligible stores, including with Shop Pay. When an agent buys for a shopper, the buyer may never see your thank-you page or loyalty account. A reward then has to work in three places without them: the agent must be able to read your reward terms, an existing reward code must apply at checkout, and the buyer must be told about any reward they earn. None of the announcements say that Muse, Instinct or ChatGPT can redeem every store's rewards, so test your own setup.

Until now, a loyalty reward assumed a human visitor. The shopper arrives, logs in, sees a points balance, picks a reward and checks out. Every one of those steps happens on pages you control.

Agent checkout changes the order of events. If an AI agent searches, compares and submits the order for the buyer, most of those pages never appear.

What changed on September 28

According to PYMNTS' report, Shopify said browser agents can now complete checkout on the sites of its eligible merchants. Agents can read the checkout, update it and submit it with the buyer's authorization, including through Shop Pay. Shopify had already let agents search products, browse collections and add items to a cart.

The agents in the news are not one integration. Here is what is on the public record:

AgentHow it reaches Shopify storesIs loyalty support confirmed for this agent's integration?
Meta's MuseProducts come from Shopify Catalog. Shopify's CEO said Shopify would enable agentic checkout with Shop Pay for Muse (announced about September 21). Reports differ on whether that checkout is live yet.Not confirmed in public announcements
InstinctShopify said Instinct's personal agent can shop and check out with Shop Pay, using the buyer's saved payment and shipping details. Not confirmed in public announcements
ChatGPTAgentic Storefronts. Shopify describes checkout inside ChatGPT's in-app browser, or a link out to the merchant's store, depending on the flow. Not confirmed in public announcements

Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed with Google, is designed to standardize commerce flows across AI platforms. Shopify's UCP page lists discounts and loyalty programs among the supported capabilities, while the UCP roadmap still lists deeper loyalty and member-benefit support through account linking as an upcoming priority, and Google's merchant documentation describes loyalty account linking as upcoming too. Protocol support does not guarantee that a specific agent, merchant checkout or loyalty app has built a working reward flow. The announcements cited here do not confirm that Muse, Instinct or ChatGPT can see a shopper's loyalty balance or redeem its rewards.

So where does your reward code go?

A loyalty benefit can enter an agent-driven purchase at two moments:

  • Before payment: the customer already holds a reward and wants to use it on this order.
  • After payment: the order earns points or a new reward, and the customer needs to find out.

A program built for AI-assisted shopping has to handle both. That comes down to three places.

1. The agent has to be able to read your program

Picture an assistant comparing two similar stores. One publishes how customers earn points, what rewards are worth and which restrictions apply. The other keeps its terms on a loyalty page the assistant may never find. Reward terms an agent can read are one more thing it can weigh. They don't guarantee a recommendation, because price, relevance, availability and delivery still matter, but terms it can't find can't count at all.

What to do: publish your loyalty terms in a machine-readable form that covers how rewards are earned, what they are worth, how redemption works and any restrictions. In Stabile, publishing reward terms for AI shopping assistants is one step in Program Autopilot, and you can unpublish at any time.

Publishing general program terms does not give an agent access to a particular customer's balance or codes. Customer-specific lookups need the customer's identification and consent.

2. An existing reward has to work at checkout

Say a customer already has a code and asks an agent to place an order. The agent still needs a checkout that accepts the code, and the code has to be valid for that cart. A minimum spend, an excluded product, an expired code or a no-stacking rule can all block it. A person watching would notice the error and try again. In an automated journey, a failed redemption is easier to miss.

What to do: review your reward rules with automated checkout in mind.

  • Keep one code, single use and a clear expiry.
  • Set the minimum order below a typical basket. If most orders fall short, most buyers never earn or redeem anything.
  • Check exclusions and discount-combination rules.
  • Test that a code actually applies to a qualifying cart in each checkout flow you care about.

3. The customer has to find out about the reward they earn

After an agent-driven purchase, the buyer may never see your thank-you page or open their loyalty account. If a new reward is shown only on those pages, it can go unnoticed, and a reward nobody notices doesn't bring anyone back.

What to do: send a clear message when a reward is earned, with its value, the code, the expiry date and any conditions. Email works because it doesn't depend on your own pages. A reminder before expiry helps too.

Stabile's Program Autopilot has a switch for reward emails. Emails go only to customers who buy on your Shopify store, not marketplace or wholesale buyers. They apply only to rewards issued after you turn the switch on, and every email has an unsubscribe link.

A four-step checklist for Shopify merchants

You don't need to redesign your program. Start with four checks:

  1. Publish your reward terms so AI shopping assistants can read them.
  2. Test redemption. Apply an existing reward code to a qualifying cart in the checkout flows you care about.
  3. Review reward notifications. Make sure customers learn what they earned, how to use it and when it expires.
  4. Check your store's AI readiness. Can an assistant find your products and understand your loyalty program? Stabile's free Store AI Readiness check shows the gaps.

These are worth doing before you know which assistant will send you your next customer.

What we have tested, and what we haven't

In September we ran a live test on our own store: a shopper asked ChatGPT about a real loyalty balance, ChatGPT asked permission, redeemed a reward, and the discount appeared on a completed Shopify order. Stabile's loyalty tools are in the ChatGPT app directory, and we have checked our published reward terms against real program data with Claude and ChatGPT.

We have not tested loyalty rewards with Meta's Muse or with Instinct, and we haven't verified how either handles a reward code at checkout. We also haven't tested an agent submitting checkout itself with a loyalty code on a merchant's store. The September 28 reporting describes agent checkout and does not mention loyalty or rewards. Treat checkout support and loyalty support as separate questions, and test the specific experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can AI agents now check out on any Shopify store? On eligible stores. Shopify said on September 28, 2026 that browser-based agents can read, update and submit checkout with the buyer's authorization, including through Shop Pay. Shopify has not published a public definition of eligibility in the coverage we reviewed.

Do Muse, Instinct and ChatGPT use the same checkout? No. Muse and Instinct are tied to Shop Pay announcements, while ChatGPT shopping runs through Agentic Storefronts, with checkout that can happen inside ChatGPT or on the merchant's store. They are separate integrations.

Does UCP support loyalty programs? Shopify's UCP page lists loyalty programs among supported capabilities, but the UCP roadmap still lists deeper loyalty and member-benefit support through account linking as upcoming. Protocol support is not the same as a working reward flow in a particular agent, checkout or loyalty app, so test the specific experience.
