Direct Answer Shopify publishes a machine-readable Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) profile that tells AI shopping assistants what a store can do. On September 24, 2026 we read it on four Shopify stores: each listed the same nine capabilities, including catalog search, cart, checkout, and discounts, and none listed loyalty, even though UCP added a loyalty extension in its August 25, 2026 release. Because Shopify writes the profile, neither a merchant nor a loyalty app can add loyalty to it today.

If you run a Shopify store with a points program, this is a platform detail worth understanding. It is not a mistake in your settings, and it is not something your loyalty app can quietly fix. It is a gap between what Shopify currently tells AI shopping assistants about your store and what your best repeat customers have already earned with you.

What is Shopify's AI shopping profile?

It is a small file that lives at a predictable address on your store's own domain:

yourstore.com/.well-known/ucp

Think of it as a business card for AI shopping assistants. It tells an assistant what your store can do and how to connect to it: how to search your catalog, build a cart, apply a discount, or complete checkout.

UCP stands for the Universal Commerce Protocol, an open standard for connecting online stores to AI agents. The details matter to developers, but the idea for merchants is simple: before an assistant can shop at your store on a customer's behalf, it needs a clear, consistent description of what your store supports.

Shopify generates this profile for you. It is not a page in your theme editor, and it is not something your loyalty provider manages. An independent probe of platform-hosted storefronts found it on all 46 Shopify stores it checked.

What does the profile tell AI assistants?

On September 24 we read the profile on four Shopify stores: Custom Agentic Commerce, our own demo store, and three large public brands. All four used UCP version 2026-08-25 and listed the same nine capabilities:

  • Catalog search
  • Catalog lookup
  • Cart
  • Checkout
  • Discounts
  • Fulfillment
  • Orders
  • Identity linking
  • A Shopify catalog extension

Each profile also listed an MCP connection, which in plain English is another way for compatible AI tools to reach the store's commerce functions.

A Shopify store's /.well-known/ucp profile: nine capabilities ticked, including catalog search, cart, checkout, and discounts, and loyalty crossed out as not listed

That is a meaningful foundation. An assistant can learn that your store has products, prices, stock, discounts, carts, and checkout, and it knows how to move a shopper from discovery toward an order.

What was not listed: loyalty.

None of the four profiles included the UCP loyalty extension, dev.ucp.common.loyalty. That extension, part of the standard since its August 25 release, can carry a member's tier, the benefits attached to that tier, and a forecast of how many points a particular cart will earn.

The standard has a place for your loyalty program. Shopify's profile does not use it yet.

Why does missing loyalty matter for repeat customers?

An AI shopping assistant compares what it can see. From Shopify's profile it can see price, stock, shipping, and checkout. It cannot see the loyalty context that may make your store the better choice for someone who already buys from you.

It cannot see that the shopper is a Gold member of your program. It cannot see that this cart earns 510 points, enough for $5 off their next order. It cannot explain that a slightly more expensive product from your store may be the better deal for a loyal member than the cheapest listing elsewhere.

That does not mean an assistant will always pick the lowest price. It does mean the assistant compares stores with an incomplete picture of your relationship with the customer. Price, stock, and checkout are visible. Loyalty value is missing, not because you left it out, but because the platform-hosted profile does not list it.

We described this gap in general terms in "If a Customer Shops Through AI, Can It See What They've Already Earned?". Shopify's profile is the concrete, checkable version of it.

Can a merchant or loyalty app add loyalty to the profile?

Not today. Shopify hosts the /.well-known/ucp address on your domain and writes the document it serves. A merchant cannot edit that platform-generated file, and a loyalty app cannot add a new capability to it.

This is a platform-level limitation, not a merchant failure, and you should not have to edit files or arrange technical workarounds to make an AI assistant aware of what your customers have earned. The loyalty extension is also new, so it is reasonable that platforms and providers are still working out how it should be supported.

Shopify has not added it yet. The important word is yet.

What is StabileRewards doing in the meantime?

We published a UCP-aligned reference for a Shopify points program. It uses synthetic demo data and shows how public program terms, member benefits, and cart earning fit the loyalty format. There is also an 80-second video walkthrough.

We have asked the UCP community a practical question: when the platform hosts the profile, how is a loyalty provider meant to reach it? You can follow that conversation in UCP discussion #863.

Meanwhile, StabileRewards answers AI assistants directly for merchants who turn it on: public program terms and what a cart would earn for anyone, and member details only after the shopper consents. It works alongside Shopify's profile rather than inside it, and it does not guarantee placement in any AI assistant.

What this does, and does not, prove

This finding is specific and limited. We read the profile on four Shopify stores on one date, and an independent probe found the same profile on all 46 Shopify stores it checked. The four profiles listed identical capabilities, and none included the UCP loyalty extension.

That shows what Shopify publishes today. It does not tell us how every AI assistant shops, whether Shopify will add loyalty soon, or whether loyalty information changes a particular customer's decision. We are not claiming a conversion lift, a ranking advantage, or any guaranteed outcome.

We are saying something simpler: if an AI assistant relies on Shopify's current profile, it cannot see your customer's member status, their benefits, or the points this cart will earn.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)?
UCP is an open standard that describes how online stores and commerce services connect to AI shopping agents. A store publishes a profile at /.well-known/ucp that lists what it supports, such as catalog search, cart, and checkout.

Does Shopify publish a UCP profile for my store?
Shopify publishes one for its stores automatically. We read it on four Shopify stores on September 24, 2026, and an independent probe found it on all 46 Shopify stores it checked. You do not need to create or maintain it.

Does Shopify's UCP profile include my loyalty program?
Not today. The four profiles we checked listed nine capabilities, and none included the UCP loyalty extension (dev.ucp.common.loyalty), which can describe a member's tier, benefits, and the points a cart will earn.

Can my loyalty app add loyalty to Shopify's UCP profile?
No. Shopify writes and hosts the profile, so neither the merchant nor a loyalty app can add the loyalty extension to it. That is a platform-level decision.

How can AI shopping assistants learn about my loyalty program today?
Through a loyalty provider that answers assistants directly. StabileRewards gives AI assistants a store's public program terms and what a cart would earn, and shares member details only with the shopper's consent. It works alongside Shopify's profile, not inside it.
